Vittore Carpaccio, St. Stephen is Consecrated Deacon

St. Stephen kneels before St. Peter (with his short, square beard). One of the six other deacons-elect looks on from the far side of the staircase; the other five kneel behind Stephen, accompanied by some of the Christian women. On the left a group of Jews has gathered. In this period it was common to picture non-Christian inhabitants of the Near East in turbans.

A paper attached to the pilgrim's staff in the lower right has the date and signature: VICTOR CARPATHIVS / PINXIT M·D·XI·
